Working on new designs

Having quite the time experimenting with new clay, glazes, designs, and textures. Also am
getting ready to launch a new category at our shop featuring wondeful tribal and ethnic world art for designers wanting that special focal. All of the pieces for sale were selected by me personally at shows. Many pieces are hard to find one of a kind focals. Hoping all of these tribal pieces plus our new stoneware and porcelain designs will end up in some glorious new necklaces and bracelets as well as amulets and talismans..

Driving as Therapy
The world news, the Northwest darkness and stuff has me in the pits, so I got on the road in the Subaru and headed out on I-5.
Driving and roadtrips have always worked for me when I am in a funk. I checked the weather reports and there was no where to drive to reach the sun.. rain in every direction.
So I went out into the storm. The ride up North was gusty and wet, but I started to feel better. I drove out to La Conner. The Skagit Valley makes me feel all better immediately. The hills, farms, green fields and the snow geese and trumpeter swans. Hundreds of big white birds everywhere chowing down in the wet fields. Truly remarkable. See swans
Later at my daughters' place I watched the local heron hanging out waiting for lunch in the pasture. I asked myself where could you live with such grandeur and I came out of the funk. The Thai dinner didn't hurt either.

Haiti
It is simply impossible to carry on as usual when Haiti is in ruins. Disasters such as this one test us as a human race and put our limited resources and skills to the test. Prayers going out to all the suffering, lost, grieving.

Global Connections-New Line of pendants, baskets and beads
This is one of our new pieces from our new Global Connections line. It is based on African granary ladders. All of the pieces in the new line are tribal, ethnic, asian/african influenced. Andrew Thornton will have a few pieces in Tucson at the Green Girl Studios booth at Best Bead Show. Stop by and have a look. We will also be adding to our shop online.

Ready to Glaze
We hope to be at Santa Fe in March for Beadfest and also will be at The Bead Factory's Tacoma Show. We also plan to do the Portland Bead Society's November Show.
We have a couple of Trunk Shows planned and maybe the Northwest Bead Society in September. All in all planning a low key holiday and working on the line keeps us busy. Lana still toiling away at Evergreen State College inthe IT Dept.
I am mixing it up by making both stoneware and porcelain pieces and we are adding some niches, jars, and boxes. very sweet additions.

The Muse

Making porcelain mini versions of ancient doors, belt buckles, African granary ladders, Middle Eastern purses, and magical focals influenced by cultures from around the world. What fun.
I feel this global tribal muse is perfect for us. Our antiquities collection was a start but this is even more complicated and intricate. I love working with clay. Retirement is certainly not what I thought it would be. I feel very involved in this endeavor and saturated with images and ideas.

In the studio..
Lana and I are in slow clay mode. Dreaming pieces into being. Researching first.. lots of ancient shapes and ethnic pieces. Altering these bits and pieces into components for contemporary jewelry and sacred objects. We are making niches and rattles and amulets.. all sorts of yummy things. We are making to please ourselves, hoping others will appreciate the work. New glaze combinations.New techniques. We are very into making the clay.. clay not into something else. Very sensual and organic process and it is fun!!!
After first firing, will post some teaser photos. Wish us luck.

New Directions
Thinking about silks, bronze, ancient designs, unusual symbols, well worn gracefulness, global connections, and moving parts. It is so much fun to design from scatch- a new line. I am so ambitious this time. I might be the only one who loves this new work but that will be ok with me.
10/27/2009
Lana at Rockport
Lots going on here. We had a blast Rv camping with our group way up in Rockport on the Skagit River. Torrential rain, dead salmon, fall color and snow on mountain top.We are back in studio and making new work for 2010.I was thinking that maybe some of you out there have projects and concepts for jewelry, quilts or other art forms that would benefit from porcelain and stoneware pieces.
Are there any shapes, designs, or sizes that you need that you need that you cannot find?
We would be happy to try out some new ideas and shapes that may have missed our
style inventory. Let us know with a comment or email: joan@offcenterproductions.com
and we give it a try.

Oldies but Goodies... ummm???
My Dell is back in service and I am reorganizing files, contacts etc. I have been reviewing photos of ceramic work from the last 4 years and am mightily amazed. It looks really good. I experimented with so many glazes and shapes and truly aimed for one of a kind.
I had tired of the shapes and glazes and was eager to do everything new new new in the studio; now I am rethinking that and may resurrect some of the best of the past.
I am so itchy to start making new pieces. I may call on my manic side so I can produce a really large stash of pieces.

Home and Happy

Look forward to the studio and lots of work designing and making a new line to preview at Santa Fe BeadFest in March.
We will have a line of coordinating beads, pendants, focals, connectors and cords. It is a big secret project and I am sooo excited to start the process. We are inspired by many cultures and artifacts as well as artists from many media. We decided that after 4 years it is time for a whole new look. The older work will be placed in the on line shop so customers still can access it.
We send out gratitude hugs to all who have given support during my surgery and recovery. We are eager to continue to support a vibrant and dynamic artisan bead culture.

Looking forward to fall and planning for 2010.

Recovery

I am truly the bionic woman. Second total knee replacement healing nicely. I may not be able to leap tall buildings but I hope to walk without a limp. And for those of you who have endured me with my worst pain.. I will be able to start and finish a sentence without deep breathing.
This recovery was different from first; I had to have warfarin and that meant no antiinflamatories so the process was challenging. I am in pt 3 times a week. eeeek!!!!
Hope to be fit and go to NY Sept 2 and do Beadfest Portland.
Look forward to seeing folks and customers soon. Many thanks for your best wishes. Joan T

Upgrading from the Beadmobile...
We went on a camping weekend with the Cascadia RVW women campers group and bought ourselves an RV. We are keeping our sweet Beadmobile van as a short trip vehicle and adding a 1996 Minnie Winnie for longer trips and Snowbird adventures.
I will post a picture as soon as we get the rv. It is well used and loved and comes from a couple who are getting a larger rig.
We are thrilled to have air for Arizona and a stove and refrig etc. I am already redecorating.
Have not named her yet... ???????? Any ideas?

ARTFEST 2009 Linda and Opie Obrien

We had a fab time at two workshops with Linda and Opie OBrien. They are wonderful artists as well as being delightful Brooklyn expats. We were inspired and acquired some new skills and tried out new materials we hope to use in future work. These teachers have the ability to empower and Linda and Opie give their students tons of energy and direction. We hope to try out several of their introduced materials and also take more workshops with them in the future.
Artfest was inspiring, fun, relaxing and a festival of creativity.

Artfest
Went shopping to the Bead Factory in Tacoma for some last minute materials for Artfest.Such a great bead shop with many great goodies, helpful staff wow a fun experience.

Had to resort to last minute order to Rio Grande for some silver. Lana and I are jumping in to working with altered art, silver, and mixed media. All new for us. I will be lucky taking a class from Ruth Rae and Lana has a day with Michael de Meng. We both will be spending two days with Opie and Linda O Brien. Photo of their work.

The first day of spring is one thing, and the first spring day is another. The difference between them is sometimes as great as a month.

Getting Ready for Camping
Lana and I love the Beadmobile -our Ford Conversion Van although it lacks a kitchen and a few amenities. We love the open space.. we took the seats out. We have a porta potty and an extra foam bed and food etc. We will hook up to electricity in most cases. We have traveled over 20,000 miles in it already but have not camped. we use it as a traveling studio /office/ refuge.
It is comfortable and roomy. We carry show stuff on the rear rack.
This spring and summer we are planning to camp. I have added a chest to hold food, plates and appliances. We also have a propane stove.
We hope to camp at the coast, in the mountains, and at the beach. We want to go to Tofino on Vancouver Island. There are such an abundance of beautiful camping places in easy reach of Lacey. We already have camped at Hood Canal and Westport.
We want to try out this small size camping arrangement so we can evaluate what next. When we have more time, would we get a mini trailer and tow it or would we get a more contained van conversion.
Lana and I bonded 25 years ago in a van and we still get a kick out of blasting down the freeway all tucked in our van with our music on.
May have to take the cats on longer trips in the future. Have to figure that out.
For now, I am having fun planning the trips and organizing . Lana is the driver and for once I give over and enjoy being the passenger. It's all good!! Happy Trails!

My Muse
I am in a funk. One day I get out of it and then the next day back into it. I feel like I lost my Muse. Hey girl, where the heck are you?
For all of you weather sensitive folks, you know the feeling. I feel like I am on hold.. waiting for the sun. This is at best an insane concept in Washington.. one could wait forever.
Maybe blaming the lack of sun and warmth is an excuse for some mental lethargy which has settled in. I need to wake up and get on with it.
Have tons to do. I need to make new porcelain baskets
as we are sold out. I need to finish several necklaces. I need to make more pieces for Tacoma Show. I have to order tools and supplies for Artfest. Also need to make more trades for Artfest. We are newbies so we are full of anticpation re the event.
Off to sort new beads and bring in some clay to be warmed up.

Poetry Dress by Ruth Rae
I won a contest at Ruth Rae's blog and won this magical poetry dress with my favorite quotation:
"A Wild Patience has Taken Me this far" Adrienne Rich
I love this delicate, amazing piece of work. I feel like a little kid at Christmas.. very bright eyed and believing in magic. Thank you Ruth. Go to Ruth's blog to see the stories behind this work.

When short February's done...

February is the cruelest month for me. In Washington it is still not spring , not winter, not sunny. It is a place for Valentine's Day to happen.
I get all sleepy and edgy, yearning for spring. Not a cold freeze your buns off spring but a glorious green buds, daffodils, lilacs spring. A leap of faith- a rebirth.
In Germany there were May Poles with ceremonies dating back to before recored history. In Poland girls made violet posies and baskets.
In New England where I grew up, spring was an euphoric time. After all that snow, the sun and bits of grass and tulips.. I remember going to a Girl Scout camp and sunning on the pine needle carpets with piles of snow still remaining.
I get a jolt of creativity once the first warm days arrive. Our little sparrows and wrens were out apartment shopping today. A good sign. The male goes in the birdhouse first then he invites the female.. she checks out the colors and the kitchen then they twitter for awhile. Wow. Bring it on!!!

Yes we can!
I am filled with joy and gratitude on MLK Jr Day to anticipate tomorrow's inauguration of Barack Obama. So many joyful faces watching the train; so many young people watching this moment of hope.
I remember where I was in 1963.. on my way to Georgia with my infant daughter driving through many small towns hostile to Northerners. . Scary times.
All those in today's crowds- my son and family are there and my web designer... so many people witnessing history and also joining in a collective breath of change. I keep crying; feels ok and cathartic. I am so glad I witnessed those days and these days.
I hope everybody in their own way acts on this charge to change and to serve. Hope is the stuff of
dreams and also the motivator of many great actions. Peace.

Off to Tucson with new work...
We have been making new shapes and designs for Tucson. We have skulls, birds, and owls( seen in current Stringing Magazine) for the first time and wonderful turquoise high fired glazes. We have some crystalline glazes as well. The faces and Bead Heads have expanded to more shapes and designs for those who love them. Stringing also has a necklace with one of our baskets. The necklace was made w by Michele Mach of Beadin Dailey.
We have some new necklaces made with our beads which I designed; one will be in Step by Step Beads April issue.
I am mightily proud of my necklaces. A new departure for us.
I am into ethnic, "green", organic necklaces. very retro 60's wonderful to wear and some have an altered art edge to them. We will be expanding in 2009 into our new jewelry line using silver, bronze, brass, and waxed linen. I hope everyone loves them as much as I do. They are necklaces for strong women- women who buck the girlie look.. want to be embellished in a bold goddess way. Come see us in Booth 20 at Best Bead Show in Second Hall.
We have hundreds of new porcelain and stoneware baskets, pendants, and faces.

Waiting for the Solstice

In Washington, things are very cold; an unusual deep freeze. snow in the mountains.
My daughters are making their annual cookies this year and up on the mountain there is 8 " of snow.
We are making cards,, cookies, putting up the tree, outside lights etc. My neighbors are definitely not the Kranks. The loop is all lit up. Old suburban fun. We put some white lights up and have in past years really gone mad with white lights in the huge oak but this year more subtle. We have lost friends and family this year and many have lost jobs and businesses are slow.
We are hunkered down with simple things: hot cider, German cookies, white chocolate; gluevein,
baked chickens with lemons and lots of spicy smells. Making jewelry for presents.
I have been thinking of the many family and friends who have brought magic into my life. Mary Lee, Steve, Chris H, Mona, Aunts from New Jersey, Uncle Nick, Mrs Green, my mom, Moki, Patti and Jim, Maloney, to all of them love and holidays peaceful wishes.
I love this necklace that Norma Dalton made with our early porcelain; it reminds me of winter and solstice. Happy Holidays to all!

This is my favorite passage from Integrity by Adrienne Rich
Photo from Flickr by Jeannot7
Anger and tenderness; my selves.
And now I can believe they breathe in me
as angels, not polarities.
Anger and tenderness; the spider's genius
to spin and weave in the same action
from her own body, anywhere even from a broken web.

Back from BABE
Well we braved winds and rain in the Beadmobile and have returned to WA from BABE in Oakland. We stayed with wonderful Boogie Dog Glass and had a blast. Great dog love at that house!!!
Hung out in boothdom with Judy Mountain and Wayne Robbins.. great discussions and many laughs. Also in our area was Vicki Cedarquist.. more stories and great fun.
I believe at some level -all we have are our stories; that ebbing and flowing and merging of lives and the tales that we tell to attempt to describe the journey.
Also met Anne Michell and are considering her Tucson Class in fine silver. The silver seems to be a perfect match for adding to the possibilities of our porcelain.
All in all, a fine trip; saw SF friends for dinner and had hugs and quick visits with other vendor friends. Especially send thanks to Connie and Dean at Two Cranes for the "ring" wow!!!!

Had fun with our Beadhead buddies. Great seeing Lisa and Kelly; also nice to meet Lisa Peters and Joan Miller. Had fun with Darlene and shared stories with the Beckers from Clay River. The Toners were there with their enamel as well as Sara from C Koop. Wild Things and Elan in fine form with great beads. Such interesting and talented people. Had a great dinner with Dee, Karen and Virgina from Clasp on Clasp off and Virginia made a fab necklace with one of our porcelain tubes and one of Marla James pieces.
Gave out many of our "She Who Creates" buttons and loved seeing them on bags all over show!
Prepping now for Portland Whole Bead Show and the Tacoma Puget Sound Bead Festival.
Forget to bring camera so have no pictures.

Also have more of the "She Who Creates" Plaques. We have been experimenting with new glazes and have some pretty colors. Love our new matt glazes -very soft to the touch.
Playing with Vintaj findings and our porcelain charms. Had many interested customers at Yakima trunk show at Bead and Body. The brass goes very well with our glaze colors and also with patina of "Antiquities" line.
Can hardly wait to get feedback from customers at Bead and Button.

Bellingham Bead Festival
Back from Semiahmoo. The Bellingham Bead Festival was great! Met tons of new beaders and all our friends from Canada. Loved receiving feedback on our new Cone 10 porcelain. The new turquoise glaze was a hit. Sold my Ice Goddess ( pictured on side panel of this blog) so sad to see this beauty go; I hope she becomes a part of a beautiful necklace.
Met some new vendors and got to chat with others. It is always fun to hear of the road trips and adventures. New goal: go to Hong Kong with Wild Things!!! Now that would be a blast. Buy pearls and yummy gemstones and mix them up with our porcelain. Wow!
Next show Bead Expo Portland on March 27th. We are back in the studio for some additional firing. Look forward to seeing our Oregon customers in Portland. Mention our blog and get 10%

Home from Tucson
We are back from Tucson. It is bittersweet. Great to see the cats and familiar surroundings but already miss the pink on the mountains behind the condo in Sabino Canyon. Fell in love this time with sun, the quail, the bunnies and most of all the light. Vitamin D is short in the gray Northwest.
Always will be grateful to Veryl in Las Cruces for hospitality and Sue and Donna for taking us in and allowing us to enjoy the beauty of the Southwest.
We drove first to Sacramento through the bad weather and finally saw Mark in Tucson. Arrived in Pasadena late and finally found parking for Beadmobile and set up show. Stayed in Hilton. Met tons of people.
Enjoyed meeting Teresa from Walla Walla and her beautiful pearl jewelry. Also enjoyed meeting Kim Fox who makes exquite pieces. The girls at Clasp on Clasp Off were in their usual high spirits and we were inspired by their energy. Met the silk cord people at Class Act.. really love their hand dyed work. Sara at C Koop was there from Duluth and her mother from Lake Havasu. Her enamel as always was remarkable. The Toners from Dancing Turle also had their terrific booth with the quality necklaces and pendants.
Marsha Hedrick and Vlad from Bulgaria were there and fun as always. The show was jam packed with beautiful things mostly artisan made.Had a great dinner with Lisa Kan and her husband and friends.
We drove to Las Cruces though cold weather and rain and wow!!! scenery then back to Tucson . Settling in condo and meeting up with Ellen Mankhen from NY who worked at To Bead True Blue with us all week. Want to thank Dawn Calkins from Murana for helping out at Best Bead all week.. what a doll! Will write more later. ........

Day after Christmas-Think spring!!!
I always treat the day after Christmas as the first day of spring; living in the Northwest it is very dark at this time of the year and once Christmas has passed and the days are technically getting longer,it is fun to think spring. The tiny crocus will be up in January ..hurray.

Back from BABE
We are back from BABE show in Oakland, had a great time! Beadmobile had a problem driving down but we got it fixed in Roseburg, Oregon. Very nice folks at Ford dealership. Enjoyed staying at Marriot, extremely convenient to get to show in Convention Center.
Met more bead folks. Lisa Kan, who I only knew through magazines articles and Karen Lewis (KLEW) who makes the most amazing polymer pieces. As always enjoyed seeing Guy and JMe from Wild Things and our lovely friend from Chicago, Ofilia Cinta. Kelly Russel was telling stories as usual and wowing folks with her wonderful PMC masterpieces.Lisa has a book coming out. Check it out. Also Carol Cypher has a new book. Also had a visit from old friend Judith from San Francisco, BART is a wondeful resource.Gail Splaver was across from us with her darling beads--very magical.
We hope to take a PMC class with Kelly in Tucson at Tanya's Whole Lot of Whimsy shop.
I am consumed with making small porcelain pieces for PMC artists to use in their creations.
We are planning for turkey day and then I am off to New York. I will see Ellen Mahnken and confer over new jewelry.
Happy Thanksgiving to all......

Ellen Mahnken, Bead Artist
We at Off Center Productions in WA are so happy to have met Ellen Mahnken who lives out in the Catskills in a retreat setting any gnome or troll would love; imagine snowly birches and rock faces and Woodstock; right now all aglow with fiery maples. This amazing artist paints, fuses and paints glass, makes beaded jewelry and creates endless treasures using bead techniques.
I am so thrilled to feature some of her jewelry in which she has embellished our porcelain pendants.I feel very collaborative about this venture because while I seek out charming, unusual, and beautiful bead objects in my travels and at shows for her; Ellen dreams up magical necklaces using some of the parts I have found for us.
Ellen has the exquisite color sense of a painter and the ability to master the myriad of bead techniques.
If you want to see these necklaces in person and meet Ellen; stop by To Bead True Blue at the Off Center Productions Booth in the tent gallery in February in Tucson and see these wonders for yourself. We will have our porcelain pendants, beads and cabochons for you to purchase as well. Bead Gypsies

We are back from longggg trip to Tucson and Best Bead Show and NW Bead Society Show in Lynnwood.
We drove 3500 miles in the Beadmobile and went from 114 degrees in Phoneix to 49 in WA. The sunrise over Phoenix was awesome as was the red setting sun through the redwoods in California. We stayed a couple of days in Morro Bay and saw sea otters.
There were so many kind people and pretty sights. Did well at Best Bead Show; folks like our new Artifacts line. Saw our friend Kelly Russell and met Sara from Duluth and other zanies who made the show a hoot. We reconnected with Pam Liddil and met her husband. Saw folks from other shows and met some new bead friends.
We had to race back to WA to set up for Northwest Bead Society Show and made it. A few cramped muscles and sore backs. The show was very well done and location great.
Kudos to planners. Saw old colleagues from Everett and Edmonds Community College; also got some new Norma Dalton Necklaces. WOW!!! Pleasure to see Red Garnet Bead and Button there. We displayed some of Ellen Mahnken's necklaces and folks were knocked out with their beauty and skill.
Highlight of Tucson was seeing Carol Saker and reception for Beads of Courage, a program helping kids with cancer and other terrible illnesses. Check it out on line and give to them -so worthy a cause.

Off to Best Bead Show Tucson
We are taking off to the Fall Best Bead Show in Tucson; taking the Beadmobile and zigzaging across the western states.
We will be introducing our new Artifacts line and the Babushkas. We have been having alot of fun in creating new porcelain pendant designs. The Artifacts are inspired by antiquities from Babylonia, Mestopotamia and Greece.
The faces pendants are inspired by my Polish and Ukainian grandmothers.. we have added uncles, cousins and even young Harry. They have stringing holes; some are vertical and some horizontal. I made a few as cabochons;they can be trimmed in peyote stitch.

In the studio..
We are consumed with design and glazes in the studio; making new work for Tucson for the Best Bead Show in September. We hope to have a new line to introduce there and are excited about our new direction. Feedback from designers really influences us and we listen carefully to trends and directions. We struggle with our decison to make one of a kind pendants since it is hard to entice wholesale buyers when they have to choose each piece for their shop. We are clear that our creativity and the philospohy of craft will keep us making each piece uniquely for now at least.
We have a new line of sculpted heads called Beadheads which are whimsical and fun. Joan makes each head and creates characters. A customer in Chicago bought the first- "Babushka" and we now have made quite a few others, all different.

Portland Whole Bead Show
We just returned from showing at the Portland Whole Bead Show. A very nice group of creative people offering yummy work for beaders. We were located next to Rick at Zeka Beads and the banter made the time fly by. Ava from Whole Bead and her whole crew were so friendly and helpful. Wynnwoods Gallery from Port Townsend were very helpful and we appreciate their expertise in the marketplace.
The customers were amazing; alot of talented experts and novices. Some were scanning for the special bead or unusual pendant; others were very expert and knew exactly what they wanted.
Folks are learning about Off Center Productions through our snazzy web site and blog and word is spreading by ads such as the August edition of Bead and Button.
Our one of kind artisan porcelain is intended to be used as a focal; collected; stashed; and generally enjoyed. We have delicious glaze colors; smooth and very earthy surfaces; and a wide range of shapes-some unique to us.
We feature, brag about and celebrate the designers who use our work and we try to encourage them to email photos so we can post finished work on this blog.
Our latest wonder is the Ode to Marie Antoinette entered in the Art Bead Scene. June contest. The necklace is by Norma Dalton Of Lynnwood, WA.
See us next at at Puget Sound Bead Festival in Tacoma July 13-15
